Archaeological Museum of Forlimpopoli (MAF): dive into the past, between Prehistory and the Middle Ages
Housed in the charming ground floor rooms of the fortress, the museum contains precious artefacts relating to local history. Following a chronological order and with theme displays, the six rooms house material from chance finds or excavations from the town and the surrounding area. Artefacts from the lower Palaeolithic, proto-historic, Roman and mediaeval periods document how the town was populated and its transformation from its earliest history. It is a veritable journey through time, helping visitors to discover the history of the town, in particular Forum Popili, a flourishing trade centre founded by the Romans in the 2nd century BC that underwent its greatest expansion from the 1st – 3rd centuries AD. The rooms also house remains of the early Romanesque cathedral, dating from the 12th century and dedicated to St. Maria Popiliense, which was destroyed in 1360 by the papal army under Cardinal Egidio d’Albornoz. Founded in 1961, the archaeological museum is dedicated to Tobia Aldini, its curator from 1972 to 2003 and a single-minded advocate of historical studies regarding Forlimpopoli. The museum has been completely renovated, thanks to major refurbishment that also reorganised the layout.
The museum is run by the RavennAntica Foundation.
